Make a pit-stop at the Ranthambore Fort, situated just outside Sawai Madhopur. It is known to be one of the strongest fortifications in India, and it has served as the seat of power for the likes of Prithviraj Chauhan, Allaudin Khilji and Rana Sangha. After exploring the fort, drive to your hotel in Sawai Madhopur.

  • Other Recommendation

At Dausa, 60 km outside Jaipur on NH48, a left takes you to Ranthambore. Head about 35km straight, however, and you will reach a village called Abhaneri, popular for the Chand Baori, an ancient, 13-storeyed stepwell that featured in the movie "The Dark Knight Rises". We highly recommend that you take this detour on your way to Ranthambore.

    • Embark on a morning and afternoon jeep safari.
    • Overnight in Sawai Madhopur.

  • Activities

An early morning safari is the best way to kick-off your day. The forest has just woken up, and who knows, a tiger might just greet you good morning.

In the afternoon, you will be picked up from your hotel for your second game drive of the day. Enjoy your jeep safari and return to your hotel for the night.

Follow the road till Kota, where you will switch to NH27. 20km further down, a left turn will take you to one of the most breath-taking views you have ever seen - the Garadia Mahadev Temple. It boasts a cliff-side view of the Chambal River, the largest tributary of the river Yamuna.
Chittorgarh is a 3-hour drive from here.

Today, drive up to the hill-top fort complex of Chittor. The fort comprises a long list of World Heritage Sites, the prominent ones being the Vijay Stambh, Kirti Stambh, Padmini Palace, Kumbha Palace, and Rana Ratan Palace.
The palace has a rich, and rather tragic history. Some of Rajasthan's traditions have emerged from within these walls, namely jauhar (royal ladies jumping into the funeral pyre of their husbands in a group) and purdah (ladies covering their faces in front of the men of the house).
The fort is also the backdrop for the story of Allaudin Khilji wanting to get a glimpse of Rani Padmini, for which he eventually attacked Chittor.

Udaipur, the City of Lakes is a quick drive from Chittorgarh, quickened by the smooth four-lane NH27 that you will be driving today. You should reach in time for lunch, for which, we suggest that you head to Krishna Dal Bati, the place to be if you want to enjoy its namesake Rajasthani specialty.

  • Activities

Visit the City Palace and Jagdish Temple.

After a hearty lunch, the gorgeous City Palace makes for a good visit. It was built by Maharana Udai Singh II, founder of Udaipur, in the 16th century, and is the main highlight of the city. The palace is located by the Pichola Lake, the largest, most picturesque lake in Udaipur. For Jagdish Temple, your next stop, leave your car behind and hop into a tuk-tuk (you cannot take a car there). Dedicated to Lakshminarayan, an incarnation of Vishnu, this 17th century temple is renowned for its elaborate, hand-made sculpture work. After seeking your blessings at the Jagdish Temple, check-in to your hotel and settle in for the day.

  • Other Recommendation

The rest of the evening is at leisure. We suggest you drive to Udaipur's Shilpgram. It is a museum that brings together Rajasthan's rich and varied culture from all over the state. It also has shops selling clothes, decorations and handicrafts.
Udaipur is also popular for its street-food, and the best place to try some of it is at the Sukhadia Circle. For those looking for a more upmarket meal, head to 1559 A.D. solely for their laalmaas, if not for anything else.
